We continue on the inaugural trip from Altoona, Iowa to Long Beach California. This time, our travels take us from Peck, Kansas to Guymon, Oklahoma. And for some reason, I just could not remember the names of these cities (towns). I think the travel is finally starting to catch up to me, and it’s only day 3 of an approximate 6 day journey.

After leaving Wyldewood Cellars, we made a stop for gas, and another stop in a small town called Hooker, Oklahoma. Why, you may ask? Well, why not?

Hooker, Oklahoma is definitely a tourist trap, with their Chamber of Commerce selling all kinds of very basic “Hooker” memorabilia, from hats, shirts, shot glasses, and of course, a shirt-like magnet, which adorns the freezer in the rig.

As in the video, while pulling into the Hooker Gift Shop, perhaps out of excitement to see what was inside, or perhaps because I needed to pee, I cut the corner a bit too sharp, and the passenger rear wheel hit the tiny curb, causing one of the cabinet doors to come flying open. At the time, it was filled with bottled water, which made the base very heavy, causing more damage to the rail. Fortunately, it wasn’t anything that was major, and didn’t damage the drawer itself, so I looked out there. A new rail system from Home Depot and everything should be good to go. Later in the trip, the same thing happened to the drawer that is under the stove. I noticed that these drawers don’t have any other closure or locking mechanism, other than the door glide itself, this is something that will have to change in the future.

We stayed at the Corral Drive-In and RV Park in Guymon, Oklahoma. Unfortunately, the drive-in portion was officially closed the previous year, but photos online showed RV’s lined up along the side, with movies playing on the big screen nearby. With the rising costs of movies, upgraded digital projection gear, and all the other expenses, the drive-in just wasn’t making it, the RV park was the part of the business that was making the dough, so they expanded the RV park and shut down the Drive-In.

But, there was still playground equipment setup in front of the movie screen that Paul and I had the opportunity to explore. It is a true blast from the past, as this type of playground equipment has been condemned in most places in California, but they were perfectly fine back in the 80’s. It’s really amazing how any child who grew up in the 80’s is still alive today, considering there were no seat belt laws, car airbags, and all those other things we see as standard nowadays.
